Many people wonder what Day of the Dead is about. They often equate it with Halloween; however, they are not the same.
Day of the Dead is a holiday of remembering family and friends who have passed on. Families make small "altars" in their homes where they place pictures of the loved ones they are remembering. They also fill the altar with food, flowers, toys (if a child is being remembered), skeletons, sugar skulls, candles, and sweet bread (a typical Day of the Dead food item).
They make the altars to greet the souls of the loved ones. It is believed that the souls of children who have passed return on Oct. 31. On Nov. 1 the adult souls return. And on Nov. 2 everyone goes to the cemetery to feast and say good-bye to the souls. They bring many of the items from the altar to the cemetery. Marigolds are a common type of flower used to decorate. It is said that the strong smell of the Marigold helps the souls find their graves after everyone has feasted and celebrated.
I hope you enjoy the crossword puzzle and that Day of the Dead is less of a mystery to you if you ever wondered about it.
