I did this EASY, FUN ACTIVITY yesterday with my students, grades 5-8.
This activity was to practice new vocabulary and the words por favor (please), gracias (thank you) and, de nada (you're welcome). Here is what we did:
I have flashcards of all 16 words. Each flashcard is about 4" x 6" in size with a picture of the vocabulary word and the Spanish word below it.
I passed the cards out to all the students. Since I have less than 16 students in the class, some students got 2 cards.
I have the words "por favor", "gracias", and "de nada" on my classroom wall. I keep everyday types of words like these on my wall to help students use them during class and in their daily lives.
Once everyone had flashcards, they all came to the middle of the room. They had to wander around looking for a flashcard they would like to have instead of one of their own. When they found one, they had to say to the person, for example, "la chimenea por favor". (The chimney please.)
The person had to give him/her the card. The student then had to say "gracias", and the giving student replied with "de nada".
This is a REALLY easy activity, but it is great to use at the beginning of the school year when vocabulary is new and everyday words and phrases are new too. The students get a kick out of how quickly they forget to say "please, thank you, and you're welcome".
I wander around while they do this and remind them like you would a small child being given something by saying, "And what do you say?" They giggle and reply, "¡Gracias!"
