Solid learning through simplicity is at the core of the Spanish for You! curriculum. It is about presenting material in a straightforward, organized manner using effective teaching methods. It is about providing students with purposeful practice focused on what they do as opposed to how much time they practice. Spanish for You! is about accomplishing a lot of solid learning without complication.
In education today there is a lot of pressure to incorporate so many extra elements into all that is taught. Examples of this in foreign language would be to make sure we incorporate elements of culture like art, music, food, literature, sports, and so on into the lessons. I believe this can be good, but it is important to be careful not to lose a solid connection to the core material that we want students to learn. Spanish for You! strives to keep a clarity of focus on the language learning itself. Extra elements are added in a lesser role.
Another aspect of solid learning through simplicity is the actual materials themselves. I believe that materials do not have to be fancy or expensive to be effective. If materials have well presented concepts with engaging practice, then students will learn well. There are so many beautiful materials available for education, many colorful and shiny or technologically appealing, but it is important to be sure that they also have educational integrity. It is important to evaluate if they will truly accomplish solid learning.
Keeping things simple, but effective is something I continually try to stay true to in teaching and in writing curriculum. I think that simplicity allows for a certain inner peace and focus when learning. It gives the learner the opportunity to experience the process and be engaged without complication.
